Have you created a garden to help pass the time and also be a source of fresh produce this spring? Just in case you didn’t know, the term “Victory Garden” is deeply rooted in our past. Sorry (not sorry) for the pun!
The term Victory Garden became popular in Britain during World War I. Rationing became so commonplace in Great Britain the US Department of Agriculture encouraged Americans to plant victory gardens during the course of World War II.
Here is a bit of trivia.
One-third of the vegetables produced by the US during WW II came from victory gardens.

There are many benefits to starting a garden. Here are a few reasons why you might want to start one.
- It is therapeutic. It helps you get your mind off of the current events.
- It is a terrific source of fresh vegetables and herbs.
- It is a great platform for children to learn about plants and help maintain them.
- It doesn’t require much space and it can be done on the cheap.
Container Gardens
You can plant containers with tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, squash, zucchini, and all kinds of herbs. These small containers make it easy to raise and maintain a wide variety of fresh vegetables and herbs.

Goodwin Chase homeowners hit paydirt!
JSP team member, Bobby Carroll sent out a request to the Goodwin Chase Facebook Group, and homeowner, Brandon Stokes responded with photos of their awesome raised veggie bed. Here you see their son helping water the plants. Great job, Graham!
Local Instagram rockstar, and Goodwin Chase homeowner, Kelsy Morgan-Fry also provided a photo of their gardening expertise. Here you can see her daughter, Riley showing off her “green thumb” and their containers.

Don’t forget to conserve water!
If you are on the Johnston County Water System (and even if you aren’t), it’s wise to conserve water. For residence on odd number addresses, your days to water are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. For even number addresses, you can water on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
