June is National Homeownership Month – A Homeowner’s Playbook by The RiverWILD Real Estate Team

National Homeownership Month in June shines a spotlight on supporting the American Dream of homeownership. It’s also a time to focus on making “Home Sweet Home” more livable.

June is a perfect time to give your home a little extra love and attention. Here’s your checklist of smart (and a few unexpected) ways to keep things running smoothly in your Johnston County home this summer:

Clean out the fridge and freezer

Inside of your fridge

Toss expired food, scrub the shelves, and swap out those old ice cubes. Treat your fridge to a high-tech deodorizer for a fresher start. Don’t forget to change the air and water filters for cleaner, crisper everything.

Do a tech checkup

Heading out of town? Update home security with smart locks and timers. Ensure and if needed, charge your security cameras and consider a DIY system like SimpliSafe, Blink, Ring or Arlo for added peace of mind.

Clean the air

Wipe ceiling fan blades before turning them on—dust can be a summer allergy trigger. Flip the fans to spin counter-clockwise to keep things cool. Check window screens for small tears—those bugs are just waiting for an invite.

First-aid kit refresh

Stock up on bandages and disinfectant. Clean out the medicine cabinet and check emergency supplies like batteries, water, and snacks.

Check emergency supplies

June brings with it storms, tornados, and the start of hurricane season. This month is the perfect time to take inventory of emergency supplies in your home. Batteries, flashlights, crank radios, water, food, and meds are all necessary to have on hand in case of an emergency.

Spruce up the yard

Time to Spruce up the Yard
  • Mow, edge, and trim your lawn regularly. Weed flower beds and add a fresh layer of mulch (or pine straw).
  • Fertilize the lawn to encourage healthy summer growth.
  • Test sprinklers and set up smart timers if you’re feeling fancy.
  • Drain standing water to stop mosquitoes from crashing your outdoor fun.

Garage and shed prep

  • Declutter tools and equipment. Store dangerous items safely and toss anything that’s expired or just taking up space.

Seasonal must-dos

  • Change smoke detector batteries, and your HVAC filters.

Perform a quick home inspection

  • Inspect your sinks, toilets, and faucets for leaks. Catch issues early to avoid water damage.
  • Check/clean gutters, and power wash your home, if needed.
  • Service your HVAC so it operates at peak efficiency especially for those extra hot days.
  • Inspect for bugs, mice, and snakes. Birds love nesting inside of your exposed dryer vents. Place a call to your pest control expert to keep those critters at bay.
  • Avoid house fires by inspecting and if necessary, have your dryer ducts cleaned.

Celebrating Homeownership!
